Welcome to Casa de la Plaza
Welcome to Casa de la Plaza, which literally means house on the plaza. Situated in the historical district of Granada it was in this plaza that soldier's horses grazed a hundred years ago as this was a small military outpost whose mission was to protect the city. The home is across from Xaltava church and park. The plaza is public land and is sometimes used for special events such a circus or a staging area for the annual running of the bulls. Soldiers used this house as a barrack and because of its good corner view down the street on the second floor was a gun port. It was converted to a window to match the others. The original house that stood on this spot was probably made of adobe, as so many of the houses were during that time. At some point the adobe probably fell to the elements and the walls were replaced with brick, a common building material a hundred years ago. Part of that wall is still visible in the bathroom on the ground floor where the wooden bucket for water has been replaced with a hand painted sink.
Located in the historical district of Granada where any change to the outside a home requires approval of the architectural board as well as the historical commission, this corner home over looks a small walking street that has no through vehicular traffic. The outside of the home looks much like it did over a hundred years ago, however, special permission from the historical committee was given for the remodeling project which began in 2006 and completed in 2007. The home was rebuilt from its structural members and converted to include modern architecial design for built in amenities and a soothing water feature in the intimate garden.
